The inside story
The fortress Hohensalzburg towers high above the baroque city of Salzburg. As a landmark visible from afar, the castle is an unmistakable part of the world-famous silhouette of Salzburg. As the largest completely preserved castle in Central Europe, the fortress attracts millions of tourists every year.
Archbishop Gebhard built the fortress in 1077 to protect the principality and the archbishops from hostile attacks. Around 1500, under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, the fortress was given its present appearance. In all these years it was never occupied by foreign troops. Nowadays tourists can visit one of the many museums, like the Fortress Museum, the Marionette Museum, the Altes Zeughaus and the Museum of the Rainer Regimen, or simply walk along the compound walls and appreciate the most breathtaking view over Salzburg.
