What to expect

Located at the entrance to the Old Port, since its opening in 2013, Mucem has become the symbol of the new Marseille.

You will discover this extraordinary place, world-renowned for its architecture combining technical prowess and aesthetic power

Its exhibitions present a wealth of culture, social, scientific and political aspects of the Euro-Mediterranean world of from prehistory to the present day, combining fine arts, anthropology, history, archaeology, and contemporary art.

Permanent exhibitions are "Ruralities" and "Connectivities".

  • "Connectivities" presents a history of the great Mediterranean port cities of the 16th and 17th centuries and an urban history through the evolution of contemporary port territories
  • "Ruralities" explores the foundations of agriculture and livestock farming in the Mediterranean from the Neolithic period to the present day.

On the eve of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Jean Giono (October 2020), the Mucem presents via some 300 works and documents a retrospective that goes far beyond the simplified image of the Provencal writer. Following the progression of his written and filmed work, it reveals his darkness, courage, and universality.

  • The ticket also gives access to all temporary exhibitions
  • You will find 3 restaurants on-site for as many gourmet breaks in an exceptional setting. Every day except Tuesday and Sunday evening.
  • For the audioguide, you must go through the ticket counter of the J4 (one of the two sites) to collect the audio guide, upon presentation of an identity document that is returned when the equipment is returned.
  • The audioguide is available in 5 languages (French, English, German, Spanish, German, Italian) for the outdoor routes (history and architecture).
  • Free admission every first Sunday of the month and during the European Heritage Days (21/22 September)
