The buzzing hub of the Dalmatian coast, Split is packed with shops, bars, restaurants and even a couple of cathedrals. It's the sort of place where you let your inner compass guide you – and it'll point you in the direction of the dazzling Diocletian's Palace – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Departing from Bol, you'll cross Brac to the port of Supetar in the north of the island. Here, you'll hop onto a boat for the one-hour trip across the Brac Channel. Docking at Split port – it's the right in the heart of the old town – you'll have about five hours to explore the city at your own pace. The star of the show is the vast third century palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian, who built it as a retirement home, using marble from Brac. Today, it doubles as Split's old town – there are more than 200 buildings within it – and preserves so much of the original that it has been used to film Game of Thrones. Outside, you can take in the views with a coffee from the smart Riva promenade.
