The inside story
The Dead Sea - in Arabic Al-Baḥr Al-Mayyit (“Sea of Death”), and in Hebrew Yam HaMelaẖ (“Salt Sea”) - is a natural salt lake located between Israel and Jordan. It's intriguing ancient history, which dates back to Biblical times, and incredible natural beauty makes this a must-see location for anyone visiting the region.
It's surface and shores are approx. 1,400 ft. below sea level, making it Earth’s lowest point. Almost 10 times as salty as the ocean, the extremely high salt density allows swimmers to float in its waters. As its name suggests, the high levels of salinity and concentration of minerals also means that no fish or aquatic species can grow or survive in the Dead Sea.
