The inside story

The Prague Jewish Museum is a museum of Jewish heritage in Prague, Czech Republic and was founded in 1906 by Dr. Hugo Lieben and Dr. Augustin Stein. It is one of the oldest Jewish museums in the world and documents the history, traditions, and customs of the Jewish population in Bohemia.

The museum contains an extensive collection of Judaica, one of the largest in the world, including 40,000 artifacts, 100,000 books and an archive of the Czech Jewish community history. The artifacts that you will find in the museum come from the different Prague synagogues that were demolished as a result of the Prague Jewish ghetto being cleared in the beginning of the 20th century.

After Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during the Second World War, the museum was used as a place to preserve all of these properties of the Jewish community for the duration of the war because the Nazis considered these works valuable, with the intention of creating a museum with an extinct race. After the war, the museum was placed under national administration and it wasn't until 1994 that the museum regained its independence from the state.

The museum consists of six Jewish monuments and guests can visit every day of the week except on Saturdays and Jewish holidays. From November- March, the Prague Jewish Museum is open from 9 A.M until 4.30 PM and from April to October, it's open from 9 AM to 6 PM. Take a walking tour throughout the Jewish quarter in Prague and visit each of these historical monuments as you learn about the history of the Jewish community.
