What to expect

The Museo Picasso Málaga was inaugurated in 2003. The institution has since then become fundamental for an understanding of the rich development of local culture. The museum is both a landmark and a magnet, as well as a key symbolic referent for anyone living in the capital of the Costa del Sol. For those drawn to Málaga from all parts of the world by the talent and fame of the most important painter of the 20 th century, it is moreover an invitation to learn at close hand about the life and work of the locally born artist.

A visit is made all the more attractive by the architectural merits of the Palace of Buenavista, the building that houses the Foundation, whose vernacular heritage has not only been respectfully restored but also intelligently combined with contemporary architecture.

Located in the city's historic heart, very near the Cathedral and the Roman Theatre, the museum is open every day of the year. It shows temporary exhibitions and organises a variety of educational and cultural programmes.

With this combined ticktet, you can visit the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions.

  • Permanent collection

The permanent collection, devoted in its entirety to Picasso's work, comprises more than 200 paintings, sculptures, graphic works and ceramics created between 1882 and 1972. They embody the groundbreaking innovations that mark the artist’s career and the wide range of styles, materials and techniques he revolutionised.

  • Temporary exhibitions

Genealogies of art - 27 Feb. - 31 May. 2020: This exhibition, devised and organized by Museo Picasso Málaga and Fundación Juan March, looks at ways of visually narrating the history of art through iconography. Thanks to the works of around 250 authors and artists related to visual thinking, the display, ranging from 17th-century genealogical trees to virtual diagrams on the internet, offers to the visitors a broad selection of iconography to complement the traditional discourse of art history. This section assembles works by Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brancusi, Paul Cézanne, Robert Delaunay, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Juan Gris, Wassily Kandinsky, Fernand Léger, El Lissitzky, Kazimir Malevich, Franz Marc, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Georges Braque, Paul Klee and Henry Moore, amongst others.
