Leyla, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Stratonikeia is quite unusual – as you walk around, you'll see the different eras unfold in front of your eyes – from the ancient Greeks, to Romans, the Ottoman Empire up to more modern-style homes, it's like a studio. A special feature is the restored mosque with glass panels to reveal the original stonework – it's a fascinating place.'The tour begins with a guided visit of Stratonikeia - an ancient city founded in the 3rd century BC by the Seleucid king, Antiochus I, and named after his wife, Stratonice. It was a significant city in the region during the Hellenistic period and served as a centre for trade and commerce. On arrival, you'll be able to try some traditional Turkish tea and gözleme, a savoury Turkish pancake. Wander past grand colonnades, Roman baths and on cobbled paths to see an impressive theatre that could seat 12,000 spectators – it's a glimpse into the city's glorious past. After your guided walk, you'll head to Karnas Winery & Vineyard, not far away. The winery uses traditional Turkish grape varieties and modern production techniques, and you'll sample some of their wines while learning about winemaking in Turkey.
