The ancient Maya called it ‘Where the Sky Begins' – and there's definitely a touch of heaven to Sian Ka'an. Its mangroves, coral reefs, wildlife and archaeological sites mean that it's both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve, a rare double that places it in the champions' league of natural parks. The adventure begins the moment you step onto the boat to explore the dense, lush mangroves. As you navigate through the serene lagoon, you'll be treated to the sight of local birds soaring overhead, their vibrant colours and calls adding to the rich environment. Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of wildlife like manatees gliding silently below the water's surface and crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks. As the boat drifts along, your guide will point out unique plant species that thrive in this wetland ecosystem, explaining their vital roles in maintaining the ecological balance.
Then, the afternoon is all about unwinding. You'll head to Nopalitos Lagoon, where you can swim, kayak, or paddleboard at your leisure. Enjoy a delicious lunch featuring local specialities, followed by some time to relax in a hammock.
